Jim Lowden was Director of Planning & Development at the Vancouver Park Board for 25years, managing the acquisition negotiations, design and development of the downtown waterfront seawall and park system in both Coal Harbour and False Creek. Lowden created 33 new parks in the city, redeveloped the city beaches, as well as creating the Roundhouse and Coal Harbour Community Centres and all the improvements to Stanley Park since 1984. Lowden took on responsibility for all Park Board functions in the downtown/inner city in 2000.
Lowden’s final undertaking was leading the restoration of Stanley Park after the devastation of the December 15, 2006 windstorm which did major damage in the Prospect Point area as well as 20% of the forest, taking down over 10,000 trees. Jim Lowden left a major legacy for tourists and visitors alike. In appreciation and in honour of Lowden, the newly redeveloped lookout panorama at Prospect Point has been named “Lowden Lookout.”
